Can Mercury Amalgams Cause Allergic Reactions?

I have been asked often through my years in teaching and practice if mercury amalgam used in dental fillings cause upset the immune system. Short answer: no.
This issue has been examined by several groups. First the American Dental Association weighed here with a no. Second, the FDA released its final decision today here and here. Third, the CDC has examined this issue and concluded mercury amalgam is safe. Fourth, indirectly, in 2004
Institute of Medicine examined and published its findings on the issue of mercury in vaccines causing autism and concluded current vaccine schedules should not be altered because they were safe as is.
