Buckwheat Honey and Cough Relief

I was asked about using honey for cough relief on Friday by a frantic mother and grandmother of a coughing 2-year-old girl. Great question. I remembered reading a study by Paul et al, published in 2007. They compared a single dose of dextromethorphan (DM) used commonly in over the counter cold preparations with a single dose of buckwheat honey for childen just before going to bed. Honey provided more relief from coughing than did placebo or DM. No other studies show up in PubMed searches. Honey won't hurt and seems to help, so I say give honey a try.
