New FDA warning label on Zyban and Chantix

On July 1, 2009, the FDA announced they are requiring the manufacturers of Chantix and Zyban to have a Boxed Warning on the package insert. Both medications are used to assist with smoking cessation. Based on reports the FDA has received, it decided consumers should be The warned about the risk of serious mental health events including changes in behavior, depressed mood, hostility, and suicidal thoughts when taking these drugs. I haven't seen this in my practice, however I shall be watching for these adverse effects in the future.
