Swine Flu Epidemic Update 11 Day 16 + chart

1. I decided to chart the number of cases of laboratory confirmed swine flu in the US and in South Carolina plus South Carolina's rank by number of cases. The source for the data is the CDC's website. This is updated at least once per day.

2. The number of cases continues to rise and spread to other states. Unfortunately, the third death from influenza has been reported from Washington state.

3. CDC's Flu View, a weekly surveillance report, is an excellent report.

4. This report shows that the peak number of confirmed cases during the regular influenza season was about 3,100 cases, during the 5th week of the year. At the current rate, this will be exceeded during the next week.

5. UPDATE 5/13/09. The US has exceeded the peak number of cases for the regular flu season. No sign the spread of this flu is slowing down. Eventually it will because of the weather. We don't know if this early exposure is actually a blessing. It is mild, yet putting us on alert, giving us some practice, and building up resistance in some people who might be prone. Fortunately, the number of cases in South Carolina remains low.
